hubris
what math has to teach all disciplines. (?)
when we practice math, we add, subtract, divide and multiply. we differentiate and integrate. though value is involved, (1+1 = 2), value judgments are not. adding and subtracting coexist quite peacefully. they do not go to war. if we can understand that as a meaningful principle and not just another exercise in drudgery and meaninglessness, perhaps we can understand how catholicism, islam, buddhism, paganism, atheism and in fact all religious and non-religious beliefs, can live and learn from each other quite painlessly. further, although there is a fair mix of values, there are still correct answers (so that negates, say, cannibalism as a 'religion' - because it undermines humanity) and amongst these correct answers, more-elegant answers.
perhaps math is the meta-logic linking everything in the world. and it is not a dry collection of symbols either- different minds interpret the symbols and present the logic quite differently. it simply is. if this fact can be communicated effectively at childhood education levels, maybe we will see our own lives as differentials of an integrated whole.
